Work, work, work....

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of posts. I originally set out to do one a week, but then I got overwhelmed by work. Of course I am unable to post anything from what I am working on now, but I hope to get back into the swing of things and start posting again. Thanks for checking in and hope you are all doing well!

Frogs

Another sketch, I find that I like to keep my work more on the rough/unfinished side. I feel some of the life is lost once the images are cleaned up, something I need to get past and work on. This is a digital image that I approached with colored pencils in mind.

Pumpkin King

Since Halloween is right around the corner I thought I would post this quick sketch. Enjoy!

IF: Pattern

I sketched this character awhile back. I was looking for a chance to use him somewhere and with the Illustration Friday word "Pattern" he just seemed to fit. A simpler design but I liked the concept.

Infinite

Here is my stab at the Illustration Friday's topic "Infinite". Since it is now officially fall and Halloween is right around the corner I thought a spooky type illo would be good to try. Hope you like it!

Welcome...sort of...

This is the third week I have started the Illustration Friday topic but not had a chance to finish it. I figured I would at least post the sketch that I came up with and may finish it at another time. I wanted the piece to have a Muppets / Fosters feel to it.

Ezra

Looking at pictures of Ezra Pound I was inspired to capture his likeness. Since he is credited as being a very important poet in the modernist movement, I wanted to include a "book" element in the piece. The three pages in the book reference the three very different times in his life.

Mr. Hyde

I mentioned before I am studying to create better character designs. I am working closely with Stephen Silver and have learned quite a bit. Here is a design I did from the "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" novel. In this exercise I created a turn around, attitudes, and expressions of Mr. Hyde. Hope you guys like 'em!

Wrapped!

Thanks to Illustration Friday for preventing artist block! Being a commercial artist I get use to someone telling me what to do and how to do it. Sometimes getting started on my own idea or project is hard and of course the "Blank sheet of Paper" can be an artists worst nightmare. The suggested topic this week was "Wrapped", heres my stab at it.

Coffee House Sketch

I saw this guy at a coffee house and had to draw him once I got home. He was really holding on to his cup of coffee! I feel the drawing might have gotten a little messy around his cell phone but still think it came out pretty good.

Hands

Here are some quick studies I did of hands. It is amazing how complicated the hand can seem. Breaking it down into simple shapes and parts really makes them more approachable and less intimidating.

Bowler Hat Man

This is an exercise that I learned from Stephen Silver. I started off with a realistic version of this guy. Then I tried using different shapes for his head but still capturing his likeness. I liked how they turned out so I thought I would throw them up for you to look at.

Bad Habits #2

I went through many different versions before finally deciding on this composition. I started by basing the image proportions on the proportions of a cigarette box. There are some other "subliminal" image references I put into the piece to help relate it to the bad habit. Please feel free to leave any comments of what you like or dont like. Thanks!

Brutha Joe

Another one for you guys. This is a still from a short movie taken at Point Dume in Malibu with my Brother-in-law Joe. I added a little color since his glasses really made the image for me. Next week should be Bad Habits # 2......should be...

Escobar

I had a lot of fun with Rockenbach that I thought I would throw another one up. I tried to do a slightly more caricature than straight on portrait this time. I took this picture of another of my friends, Luis Escobar. (check out his blog @ luisescobarblog). I really liked how his hair and beard really encompassed his face. Till next time...

Rockenbach!!!

Since I wasn't able to post last week I wanted to make sure to post twice this week. I am trying to learn more about character design and strengthen my knowledge of the human head. I thought I would try a portrait out. This is of my very good friend John Achenbach. I snapped this picture of him while we were working on the Simpsons Movie. I choose this picture since he was making a funny face, I figured why not really challenge myself and see how close I could get. Hope you guys like it and thanks for the comments and for checking back for the new posts!

Looking back...

This is not from my "Bad Habits" series, but I wanted to try to post at least once a week. This is an old drawing I did during my downtime at work. I came across it while looking through some old files so I thought I would go ahead and put it out there. Enjoy!

Bad Habits #1

Here is the first of a series I am currently working on. It is based on people's most common bad habits. I wanted to keep this one flat and desaturated to go along with the bad habit itself.

Starting up....

Hello everyone!

I am just starting up this blog. I wanted to make sure to set it up and have it ready for my future artwork postings. Thanks for checking in and I hope to have images posted in the near future.
